Beginner’s Instagram Guide For Small Business Owners

Looking to get started with an Instagram?

Hashtags help your business be discoverable and increase your online following. So what makes a good hashtag?
Here are four hashtags basics that every entrepreneur should know. Find out how to make a list of relevant hashtags.

Irrelevant & Branded Hashtags

You believe that you are getting your content in front of the right audience by tagging popular brands in your niche. Does this sounds like you?
We hate to break it to ya. Branded hashtags are actually hurting your business because they strip your brand of its originality.
Hashtags that are already being used to support another brand won’t help your brand.
Instead of crowding your posts with #carhartt, #columbia, or #adidas, use industry specific-keywords related to your brand (#fishinghats, #flyfishingapparel).

Timing Matters

Add hashtags either to the copy itself or in first the comment. Most posts on Instagram have a relatively short life span, so if you are going to insert hashtags into comments, do it right away. In order to do so, have your hashtags ready, copy and paste and voila you are on the road to higher engagement.

Hashtag Count

If you are looking to grow your business on Instagram, you should be using all 30 hashtags in every post. If you try to use more than 30 hashtags per post, your caption won’t post. There are so many hypotheses on a certain number of hashtags used. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Post relevant hashtags specific to your business, and you shouldn’t experience any spammy comments.

Create Your Target Persona

In order to come up with relevant hashtags, you must understand how your business serves your ideal customer. For each question below come up with 5 to 10 keywords that are relevant to your business.

The list doesn’t stop here. You can ask any other relevant questions that you think are important to your business.
What are your personas interests?
climbing, mountaineering, hiking, bouldering
What kind of support is he/she?
environmentallyfriendly, plasticfree, leavenotrace
Where does your persona hangout?
nationalparks, stateparks, outdoors, middleofnowhere

How To Find Relevant Industry Hashtags?

Instagram is based on hashtags. It is extremely easy to find the perfect ones for your content.
To start, open the Instagram app on your mobile device and tap the magnifying glass at the top of your screen.

Search Bar

Type all the keywords from the exercise above into Instagram’s search bar (the magnifying glass). Instagram will give you a list of hashtags relevant to the keyword that you typed in. Repeat the process with all the suggested hashtags from the search bar until you find the perfect set of hashtags relevant to your business.

Related Hashtags

Another way to find hashtag gems is through Related suggestion bar. In order to get to that suggestion bar, you must first tap #nationalparks or any other hashtag in order to be redirected to image #2.

Competitors

Unlike any other business, ecommerce isn’t any different. Competitors give us insight into what we can do better. Take a look at their Instagram page – learn from them but don’t copy them.
